🧶 Cashmere Care in Europe: Hand-Wash vs. Wool Cycle, De-Pilling & Moth-Proofing

🩶 Why Cashmere Needs Special Care

Cashmere isn’t just another sweater; it’s a luxury fibre that reacts to water, heat, and friction differently than wool.
In Europe’s varying climates — damp UK winters, dry Spanish air, cold Nordic seasons — the way you wash and store cashmere truly determines its lifespan.

đź’§ Hand-Wash vs. Wool Cycle

Hand-Wash (Best for premium pieces)

  • Fill a basin with cool water (25–30 °C) and a few drops of wool-safe detergent.

  • Turn the sweater inside-out.

  • Swirl gently; never rub or wring.

  • Rinse twice with cold water and press out moisture using a towel.

  • Lay flat on another towel to air-dry naturally.

Wool Cycle (Acceptable for modern knits)
If your washing machine has a certified Woolmark program and cold-water option:

  • Use a mesh bag.

  • Select 20–30 °C wool/delicate cycle.

  • Spin speed ≤ 600 rpm.

  • Skip fabric softener — it breaks down fibres.

Golden rule:
If the garment label says “Pure Cashmere” and there’s any uncertainty, go manual. The few minutes saved by machine washing can cost you the texture that defines cashmere.

🪞 De-Pilling: Make It Look New Again

Even the best cashmere pills over time — it’s friction, not failure.
To restore that matte, cloud-soft finish:

  • Use a cashmere comb or battery fabric shaver gently on a flat surface.

  • Brush in one direction only.

  • Finish by steaming lightly from a distance to lift fibres.
Tip: Avoid razors — they cut fibres instead of polishing them.

🦋 Moth-Proofing: The Quiet Protector

Moths love keratin — the same protein in hair, wool, and cashmere.
To keep them away:

  • Store sweaters clean, never with perfume or body oils.

  • Fold (don’t hang) and place in cotton storage bags or airtight boxes.

  • Add cedar blocks, lavender sachets, or natural moth repellents inside drawers.

  • Rotate or air items every few months, especially between seasons.

Avoid old-school mothballs — their chemical odour can permanently cling to fibres and irritate skin.

🌬️ European Bonus Tip: The “Freezer Trick”

After de-pilling, place your cashmere in a clean freezer bag and leave it in the freezer overnight.
It kills moth eggs and resets fibre tension, helping the knit resist pilling longer.
This method became popular in Scandinavian care guides for its eco-friendly simplicity.
