🧶 Shrunken Sweaters: What Actually Works for Wool & Cashmere (And When to Quit)

🧺 When “Oops” Happens

It starts innocently: a warm cycle, a rushed spin — and suddenly your perfect knit fits your cat.
Before you panic, know this: some shrinkage is reversible, some isn’t. The secret is fibre science, not magic.

đź’§ Step 1: The Relaxing Bath

  1. Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water (around 30 °C).

  2. Add a tablespoon of baby shampoo or wool conditioner — it softens and relaxes fibres.

  3. Submerge the sweater and let it soak for 30 minutes.

  4. Gently press (don’t wring) the water through.

🧣 Step 2: Reshape on a Towel

  1. Lay the garment flat on a clean towel.

  2. Roll it once to remove excess moisture.

  3. Unroll, stretch gently back to shape — sleeve by sleeve, hem by hem.

  4. Leave flat to dry naturally, flipping occasionally.

🔹 Tip: If you have a mannequin or blocking board, pin it softly into the desired size.

🪞 Step 3: Steam and Finish

Once dry, hover a steamer 10–15 cm above the fabric to lift crushed fibres.
This adds volume and helps restore drape — especially for cashmere.

⚠️ When to Quit

If the knit has felted (looks matte, tight, and stiff), the fibres are permanently bonded — no treatment will reverse that.
At that point, consider upcycling it: fingerless gloves, beanies, or a hot-water-bottle cover.

🦋 Prevention: Make It a Habit

  • Wash in cold water or wool cycle (max 30 °C).

  • Always use wool-friendly detergent.

  • Skip tumble dryers completely.

  • Store folded, not hung — gravity stretches damp fibres.
