🧺 When “Oops” Happens
It starts innocently: a warm cycle, a rushed spin — and suddenly your perfect knit fits your cat.
Before you panic, know this: some shrinkage is reversible, some isn’t. The secret is fibre science, not magic.
đź’§ Step 1: The Relaxing Bath
-
Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water (around 30 °C).
-
Add a tablespoon of baby shampoo or wool conditioner — it softens and relaxes fibres.
-
Submerge the sweater and let it soak for 30 minutes.
-
Gently press (don’t wring) the water through.
🧣 Step 2: Reshape on a Towel
-
Lay the garment flat on a clean towel.
-
Roll it once to remove excess moisture.
-
Unroll, stretch gently back to shape — sleeve by sleeve, hem by hem.
-
Leave flat to dry naturally, flipping occasionally.
🔹 Tip: If you have a mannequin or blocking board, pin it softly into the desired size.
Â
🪞 Step 3: Steam and Finish
Once dry, hover a steamer 10–15 cm above the fabric to lift crushed fibres.
This adds volume and helps restore drape — especially for cashmere.
Â
⚠️ When to Quit
If the knit has felted (looks matte, tight, and stiff), the fibres are permanently bonded — no treatment will reverse that.
At that point, consider upcycling it: fingerless gloves, beanies, or a hot-water-bottle cover.
🦋 Prevention: Make It a Habit
-
Wash in cold water or wool cycle (max 30 °C).
-
Always use wool-friendly detergent.
-
Skip tumble dryers completely.
-
Store folded, not hung — gravity stretches damp fibres.
